About IBEW Local Unions

Voluntary Long Term Disability Plan

You insure your house and car, but what about insuring your ability to provide for yourself and your family? What happens if you suffer an illness or injury? There’s a chance you will miss a significant amount of work and wages. Your injury might be so severe that you won’t be able to return to work at all. Who will pay your mortgage or child’s college tuition? Situations such as this are why Long Term Disability (LTD) plans are designed. IBEW Local Unions offer an LTD plan to protect our members after an injury, accident, or illness. IBEW salary protection insurance can be the difference between struggling and remaining financially stable.

What is our IBEW Local Unions LTD Plan? If you suffer an accident or illness, on, or off the job, you can receive up to 60% of your base salary, tax-free. It has a maximum benefit of $7,500 per month and is eligible for each active, full-time employee. This plan was started and is maintained by IBEW Local Unions.

Who is Eligible?

Each active, full-time employee, working 30 or more hours per week and earning an annual salary of at least $15,000 (except any person working on a temporary or seasonal basis).

Benefit Amount

You may elect a monthly benefit in increments of $100, from a minimum of $500 up to a maximum benefit of $7,500 per month. This is not to exceed 60% of your coverage earnings (rounded to the next lower increment).

Application

If you apply now, at this first opportunity, and are actively working, there are no health questions and no physicals required. You can complete the application on our website, or pick up an application at the Local Union office. Once completed, you will be billed monthly by bank draft from your account. This plan is voluntary, which means you are not locked in for any length of time. As long as you pay the monthly premiums, your coverage is not interrupted. If you become unemployed and are not reemployed within 90 days, you must notify the company and discontinue paying premiums.

You can select any level of benefit, but you cannot exceed 60% of your base salary. When you list the amount of your salary, this application will automatically compute and list for you the benefit, and the amount of the monthly premium. If you want to purchase less than 60% of your salary, you may do so. Simply enter the amount you want and the application will automatically list the new amount for you. If later you wish to increase the salary amount, you may do so. However, you will need to complete a health questionnaire, which is available at your Local Union office.
